These FAQs attempt to answer some common questions and issues that can arise when streaming content online. We provide this information as a courtesy and cannot accept responsibility for any content/downloads on linked websites or be liable for any changes made on your computer/network etc in order to listen or attempt to listen to the CHUMFM.com online stream.

  1. 1) How can I listen to CHUM FM on my computer?

Visit www.CHUMFM.com; click the "Listen Live" button. This action will direct you to the listening launch page. Select and click on the applicable connection option (i.e. low or high speed, etc.); a new window should open and the CHUMFM.com streaming player should load.

  2. 2) Do I need any special software installed on my computer to listen online?

CHUMFM.com streams audio for Windows Media Player (WMP). To listen online you will need to have the latest version of Windows Media Player installed or depending on your operating system, a media player that supports Windows Media files like by Flip4Mac™.

You can obtain the latest copy of Windows Media Player from the following link
    http://microsoft.com/mediaplayer

You can obtain the latest copy of Windows Media® Components for QuickTime, by Flip4Mac™ from the following link
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

  3. 3) I can usually listen online without an issue but today I am having a problem connecting to the stream. What should I do? Should I make an adjustment on my computer?

If you can usually listen to CHUM FM online and today you are experiencing an issue there may be a problem with the actual stream. Try reopening the Listen Online player again and if the problem persists please let us know by emailing here.

  4. 4) I usually listen online using Firefox but I am no longer able to connect to the streaming. What I can do to listen again?

Firefox may have installed an update which may have affected the Windows Media plugin installation. To resolve we recommend visiting http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and downloading and installing the most current version of Firefox and then reinstalling the latest Windows Media Player Firefox plugin from http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7.

  5. 5) I click on the "Listen Live" link but nothing happens… where is the online player?

If you click on the link to open the online player and nothing happens it may be the result of a pop-up blocker installed on your computer. As our online streaming opens in a new window, make sure any pop-blockers are configured to accept our streaming window.

  6. 6) I am able to connect to the online stream but it continually stops and starts with a message in the media player that says "Buffering". Why is this happening?

This generally occurs when Windows Media Player isn't receiving the stream fast enough to reproduce the audio correctly on your computer. This may be related to your Internet connection speed or congestion on the Internet/network somewhere between the publishing point and your computer. If you can usually listen without a problem then the issue is most likely an Internet slowdown and in almost all cases will clear itself over a relatively short period of time. If this is an ongoing problem when you listen online, you may want to increase the size of your Windows Media Player buffer as this may improve your listening experience by eliminating some of the starts and stops.

To increase the buffer size of Windows Media Player:

    Start Windows Media player.
    Click <Start> <Programs> <Accessories> <Entertainment> <Windows Media Player>

Once Windows Media Player is running select <Tools> <Options>

The Options panel will now be displayed.

    Click on the <Performance> tab.

    In the Network Buffering section;
If the "Use default buffering (recommended)" is selected: Select <Buffer> and enter a value in seconds. Maximum 60 seconds. The draw back to increasing the buffer size is that you will have to wait longer for the actual broadcast to begin. The upside is that this should improve your listening experience.

  7. 7) The online streaming player window opens but I never get a connection, or the message in the player simply says "Ready". Why?

This may be a result of the stream being blocked by a firewall either on your computer or on your network. Please ensure you configure any firewall to allow our stream and try connecting again.

  8. 8) I have tried the solutions above but I continue to experience issues when attempting to listen, what can I do?

Some issues with streaming internet content can be resolved by updating to or re-installing the current version of Windows Media Player.
If you continue to experience problems listening to us online please email us here.

  9. 9) Is CHUMFM.com's online streaming available through a direct URL link?

CHUMFM.com does not currently provide or support online streaming other then through the listen live player accessible through CHUMFM.com
